Emily Carr University of Art + Design is pleased to present HERE + THERE, an exhibition of work by the inaugural cohort of the Low Residency stream of the Master of Applied Arts program. The exhibit showcases work reflective of over two years of research and production.
We are in the epoch of simultaneity; we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of near and far, side-by-side, of the dispersed.
— Michel Foucault
In this exhibition, the gallery is a meeting point. Nine artists have converged in Vancouver for three consecutive summers to engage in a period of production, study and reflection. The works in this room represent a culmination of those summers in Vancouver, and of exchanges spoken from diverse locations--international, local, urban, rural and remote during the intermediate months.
The artists are dispersed by geography, as much as their works are separated by mode of representation, personal history, theory, and language.
The artists are connected by Vancouver, by the shared experience of the MAA program, and by the influences they have had on one another. You are invited to consider this process and the resulting works here as the final products of a momentary, conclusive heterotopia.
